Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa: Where Water Carves Stories into the Slopes of Mount Elgon

On the northeastern edge of Uganda, 1700m above sea level, where the land begins to rise toward the volcanic mass of Mount Elgon, water does not simply flow—it falls, folds, and fractures into a landscape that feels almost sculpted by intention. This is the world of Sipi Falls, a trio of waterfalls that spill dramatically over ancient cliffs at the edge of the Elgon escarpment. But Sipi is not just a destination. It is a place that unfolds slowly, like mist lifting from the valley at dawn. Sipi Falls is often described as one waterfall, but it is actually a sequence of three distinct cascades, each with its own character and rhythm. The highest drop plunges from steep rock faces, sending fine spray into the air that catches sunlight in shifting fragments. The lower falls move with more force, carving narrow channels through basalt and vegetation.

Sipi is special. Sipi is different than other destinations in Uganda. While other sights can be crossed from the list in one or two days each, the vibes around Sipi invite visitors to stay long. While the hike along the three waterfalls is the main activity, there are plenty of other options:

Around Sipi Falls, the experience is shaped by a mix of nature, culture, and adventure set against the dramatic slopes of Mount Elgon. Visitors typically combine a coffee tour through smallholder farms—where high-altitude Arabica is grown, processed, and tasted fresh with views over the escarpment—with guided community walks that offer insight into everyday life in the surrounding villages of Kapchorwa. The waterfalls themselves are a central highlight, with hiking trails linking the different cascades, viewpoints, and valleys, and in some places allowing you to walk behind the falls or descend to natural pools where swimming is possible depending on conditions.

Beyond the falls, the wider landscape opens up into more demanding adventures like multi-day trekking in Mount Elgon National Park, where forest trails, caves, crater formations, and high-altitude moorlands create a very different mountain experience. The park also offers quieter safari-style game viewing with forest elephants, primates, and abundant birdlife, alongside activities such as birdwatching, cave exploration, and scenic sunrise or sunset hikes along the escarpment. For more active travelers, abseiling down cliffs near the falls and trail running through the hills add a more adrenaline-driven layer to the region.

Together, these experiences make Sipi a compact but varied destination where you can move in a single day from coffee tours to waterfalls, from village paths to mountain trails, and from quiet cultural encounters to highland adventure.

Where to stay?

I highly recommend to stay in Lacam Lodge! From the very many hotels I checked out around Sipi, that one is by far the best. The view is spectacular. The sound of the waterfalls at night is not too dominant, but helps you sleep actually. Lacam Lodge is the the only (from those I visited) pace, that actually manages to keep the room smell-free and dry despite the very humid environment. I enjoyed their service, the calmness and the friendliness. Super plus: Their restaurant is actually a branch of the Endiro-Cafe chain. What a luxury to enjoy capital-standards replacing my chicken by tofu on 1700m above sea level with the most breath-taking view.

Recommendation on the Guide

For anything you have in mind doing during your stay in Sipi, contact Jaret (Number: 0789255980). He is a very knowledgeable guide who will tell you lots about the clan and community structure as well. He is very calm and knows the best spots for photos. He offers the classical Sipi Falls Hike, but also can arrange a meeting with the widow association to buy your Sipi-coffee, he can also cover you for the sunset experience, abseiling and many other activities. He is a certified guide under the Sipi Falls Tours company.

Extra Tip

Do yourself a favour and go to this Google location for the sunset around 7pm. Bring snacks and drinks if you like. This is breathtaking, on the top of a cliff, with the view on Sipis biggest waterfall. The place wil get crowded with tourists!
